October may be breast cancer awareness month, but diagnosis happens year round.

Many organizations, like Women Supporting Women, work to ease the burden of those who are diagnosed and going through treatment.

Executive Director Cindy Feist says Women Supporting Women provides awareness, education and support for all breast cancer survivors both newly diagnosed and existing survivors.

“Breast cancer is all year long, not just in October.”

“The diagnosis itself can happen at any time, so you need to do monthly breast exams.”

Women Supporting Women are a non profit organization that’s there to support anyone struggling with breast cancer.

They provide emotional and financial support to anybody going through treatment.

One method they use to save people money is offering wigs, hats, scarves and prosthetics to improve self confidence while going through treatment.

“The diagnosis itself can happen at any time, so you need to do monthly breast exams,” Feist said. “Any changes in your breast, as far as one gets bigger than another, or you have nipple discharge and being cognizant of your body and if you are feeling any changes.”

She says women supporting women are hosting their 22nd annual walk this weekend where they will have sponsorships, trophies to give out and a t-shirt contest for anyone who wants to participate.

“It’s just a fun time to come out and see the new survivors and meet new people, commiserate with everybody and try to have a good time and also understand what everyone is going through.”

The walk will be one to two miles long and begins on Saturday with registration starting at 8 a.m.
