Pirates Wharf Park officially open to public

QUANTICO, Md.- After more than five years, Pirates Wharf Park in Quantico is now open to the public.  Wicomico County Parks and Recreation held a soft opening for the space Wednesday morning.

Executive Director Steve Miller told 47ABC the county purchased the property in the late 1990’s and the current initiative to turn it into a public park started back in 2018 after receiving grant funding.

Community members were able to roam the playground facility, pavilion, and portions of a walking trail.

Miller said the goal was to let the public see the progress made and get them excited about what’s to come. “The next phase, which will start next year and probably go into 2025, will be most of the waterfront stuff which people are excited about. That will include a public boat ramp, fishing pier, observation decks, and a lot of those things that highlights one of the greatest features of the property which is the river,” he said.

Wicomico Parks and Recreation says public boat access will also be offered once the river walk is built. We’re also told that extensive signage will be installed, detailing history of the space and nature.
