UPDATE: Officer-involved shooting under investigation in Bridgeville
BRIDGEVILLE, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened late Wednesday night in Bridgeville.
Just before 11 p.m., Bridgeville Police responded to the Canterbury Apartments for a reported home invasion. It was reported that a man forced his way into the house with a firearm that he showed to two residents. He then fled the scene before police arrived.
At around 11:30 p.m., the Emergency Operations Center received a call from a Perdue AgriBusiness – Bridgeville Grain Elevator and Feed Mill employee, who told police that a co-worker, later determined to be the same suspect from the home invasion, showed up at the business and stated that it was his last day. He reportedly pulled out a firearm and told his colleague to call the police before fleeing the scene.
Delaware State Police and Bridgeville Police officers responded to the area of Newton and Adams Road, where they found the suspect walking in the field and commanded him to stop. The suspect then allegedly fired his weapon twice, and a trooper returned fire. A short time later, the suspect was reportedly found dead in the middle of Newton Road with a gunshot wound. It is unknown at this time whether the suspect’s injuries were self inflicted or resulted from the gunfire exchange.
The suspect is a 23-year-old Bridgeville man, whose identity is being withheld at this time. Per DSP standard operating procedures, the involved trooper is being placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted into the use of force.
