New marijuana legislation for Wicomico County
Wicomico County Council introducing emergency legislation as they try to adapt to changing state laws around recreational marijuana use, distribution and growth within county limits.
The county is focusing on what zoning for marijuana facilities will look like.
In other words, what is acceptable and where in the county.
Wicomico County Councilman Josh Hastings says the county has previously based its rules and regulations on planning Commissions recommendations.
“With the way that they have it proposed it is very different from that of alcohol where it can be in regular commercial activity.”
New marijuana facilities would have to be in an industrially zoned space, compared to commercial or residential.
The state of Maryland has primarily remained in control of marijuana facility licenses, but some lawmakers say it’s at the cost of leeway for local jurisdictions to come up with their own rules.
“I think that really needs some work. I do not think it is in very good shape at this point,” Hastings said. “We want to make sure that folks who want to consume this product, as well as those who want to grow it or utilize it, or process it, that they can do so in a way that is not overly burdensome.”
Wicomico County does not currently have any regulations on the books that would make certain products be sold only in industrial zones.
The next county council meeting is November 7th at 6p.m.
