Milford Library welcomes community members for a Native American education program
MILFORD, Del. – On Saturday, a group of curious learners filed into the Milford Library to learn about the vast history of Native American civilizations that occupied the region years ago.
“Maryland and other areas have a great rich history of tribes,” said archaeologist Daniel Griffith.
The room full of attendees watched a presentation led by Griffith. He explained the effects of colonization in Sussex, and surrounding counties, and how the native populations survived during the time.
“The Native population persisted in Delaware- in Kent and Sussex Counties- in spite of European colonization and discrimination,” Griffith said. “I think it was just the beginning of the pressure to isolate the native population, and their ability to sustain.”
And throughout the program, Director of Outreach and Development at the Milford Museum Thomas Summers said he hopes the people who attended the event walked away with a wealth of knowledge.
“I hope that people will leave with a sense that there was a vibrant Native American life before colonization, and learned a little bit about what the culture and society was like at that point,” Summers said.
