Increased safety measures at Salisbury University following off-campus shooting

SALISBURY, MD. – After a recent off-campus shooting, Salisbury University officials are implementing measures to reassure students that their safety comes first.

“We’re hiring these officers so that we can increase our patrols on, and particularly off, campus- overnight and on the weekends, to keep our campus community safe and in the broader community,” said Eli Modlin, Vice President of Public Affairs.

Hiring additional officers, enhancing physical security and improving safety plans are just some of the steps Salisbury University is taking to prevent shootings on or near campus.

The September 13th shooting is the only one involving SU students this year,
but Senior Seren Gross said the news didn’t take her by surprise.

“When I heard about it, it wasn’t particularly shocking,” Gross said. “There’s been quite a bit of violence in the area, especially when everybody starts.”

Modlin said staying vigilant and contacting campus authorities, if there is a threat, are some of the main ways students can ensure their safety.

“We’re telling students to make sure, whenever they feel unsafe, to call the police. We don’t want them trying to deal with any situation on their own,” Modlin said.

And with the university’s efforts, Gross said she feels safer on campus.

I like knowing that the school was doing something about it, because technically, they don’t have to, because it happened off campus,” Gross said.  “The fact they’re taking the initiative makes me feel a lot more safe.”
