GMD visits Tracks & Yaks in Berlin

BERLIN, Md. – Whether an outdoor enthusiast, a cyclist or just looking for something fun to do, you can hop on a railbike for a historic ride through America’s coolest small town.

Tracks and Yaks, originally out of Frostburg, Maryland has made a second home on the Eastern Shore in Berlin. The organization takes old railroad tracks not being used, and outfits it with a two and four-person rail bike for a historic excursion. “It’s a fun time and get to do something on a historical railroad get to get outside and enjoy the nature,” says Adam Forschee, owner of Tracks and Yaks.

The Good Morning Delmarva team and photographer Kolby Redden got the chance to try it; A 13-mile rail-bike ride may sound daunting but the scenic route made the time fly by according to the team.

Forschee tells us, “It’s a great community, a new stretch of track, you get to see different things, a little different experience.” He says he was drawn to Berlin by the charming nature, great restaurants, unique storefronts, and historical value making it the perfect setting for his railbike excursions. He adds, “We have some big open stretches through old pine forests, a lot of farmland, and a lot of areas you wouldn’t get to see unless you were on the railroad tracks that aren’t accessible any other way. This was one more piece of the puzzle to bring people to Berlin for something else to do. It draws people in from several hours away that will end up making a weekend of it or an overnight trip.”

Along the way the morning team saw long needle-pine trees, leaves slowly changing just in time for fall, deer tracks, birds, and even turkeys. Beyond wildlife, there were buildings, churches, cemeteries, and places with deep history, making it an educational experience as well. “We’ve had some folks who have done both, Frostburg and Berlin and they go back and forth and try them out, and they have different aspects that make them enjoyable,” says Forschee.

While the morning team trekked along the railway and got our work out for the week, it was clear Berlin had a lot more to offer. “The coolest small town in America, I think this just makes it cooler, something very unique and fun to do, and were glad to be a part of the community and bring this here to Berlin,” says Forschee.

If you want to take a ride yourself, head over to Berlin or visit their website to book a date and time.
