Delmar community comes together to remember teen killed in car crash
DELMAR, DE. – Community members from across Delmar came together for a vigil, to honor the life of a Delmar High School teen, who was killed in a car crash, early Saturday morning.
Delmar High School football coach, David Hearn, said the news of the teen’s death was the last thing he expected to hear.
“Something this tragic is just a shocker. You almost want to think that you misheard it,” Hearn said.
The accident shook the community of Delmar. Organizer of the candlelight vigil, Doug Marshall, said he wanted to bring the community together to remember the lost life.
“The loss of a child is the deepest of all cuts,” Marshall said. “We just hope that tonight, a lot of students show up.”
Throughout the evening, people showed up in droves, to hug each other, share memories of the late teen and show support for the family.
Salisbury Police confirmed that the driver in the accident was under the influence.
Now, Marshall said the students who came to the vigil should walk away with a valuable life lesson.
“I hope students come here and see this is happening because of the loss of life,” Marshall said. “Think about things before you do it; we’re all susceptible to not thinking properly.”
And Coach Hearn said he’ll miss two things about the teen.
“I’m just going to miss that smile and handshake, almost every day,” Hearn said. “That’ll be difficult to replace- It’d be impossible to replace.”
