Uptick in financial scams targeting Del. seniors, Attorney General says
DELAWARE – Attorney General Kathy Jennings is warning senior citizens of a recent uptick in financial scams.
We’re told recent reports involve several different kinds of scams, including the following:
- Tech support scams in which a fraudster leads the victim to believe that their computer has been hacked
- Money and check transfer scams, in which a fraudster asks the senior to help them transfer funds or deposit a check
- Social media romance scams in which a fraudster feigns romantic interest in the victim in order to convince them to send money
AG Jennings notes that while these scams frequently target seniors, anyone can be the victim of fraud. The increase in reports have reportedly been noted in Kent and Sussex Counties.
Seniors statewide are urged to be vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves from scams. This includes never sending money to someone you don’t know, never paying money to receive money, and never sending money or providing credit card or online account information to someone you do not know and trust.
