SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury Zoo has sadly announced the passing of 17-year-old Peanut, the Zoo’s North American River Otter.

We’re told Peanut was diagnosed with congestive heart failure earlier this year. After months of close monitoring and care, she had a sharp and sudden decline in her health. On September 20th, staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize her so her quality of life didn’t suffer.

Peanut came to the Zoo from New Orleans in 2006 with her sister Pecan after they were orphaned as pups in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina. Pecan was transferred from the Zoo on a breading loan in 2011, at which point the Zoo welcomed Shiloh, a male otter. Shiloh died in January 2022 at age 18.
