Pokomoke Library to receive upgrades
POCOMOKE. – After over 50 years standing on Market Street, the Pocomoke Library will be getting some substantial upgrades in the coming years that county commissioner Caryn Abbott said will help the facility better serve the community.
“It was time to do this project that started before I was in office,” Abbott said. “It’ll hopefully be completed while I’m in office. We’re excited to see it come to fruition.”
Redone from the ground up, Abbott said the public library will be given a more modern look to help it fit in more with today’s time.
“This is going be a state-of-the-art building,” Abbott said. “It’s going to benefit the community in a huge way; hopefully reinvigorate the community, and their love of the library.”
Weston Young, the Chief County Administrative Officer, said the funding for all these upgrades comes from two crucial sectors.
“The funding for the library 50% of the construction comes from the county, 50% comes from the state,” Young said. “The state will only give us what we can spend in a fiscal year, so the library director has to apply each year for the next round of funding.”
Young said it’s time to stop putting a band aid over the problem and figure out a solution.
“The building is 50 years old and it’s past its useful life, so we need to do something, rather than just renovating,” Young said.
