Ocean City to host events to remember 9/11
OCEAN CITY, Md. – It’s been 22 years since 9/11 and just as the Knowles father and son duo do every year, they will be welcoming people to Ocean City tomorrow night to view the double beam light display, to remember the Twin Towers and all those who were lost that day.
Lieutenant Michale Knowles, with the Ocean City Fire Department, looks forward to the event every year.
“There’s no words that I can have to describe how important it is to me, and I wish that everyone had the opportunity to have family, friends and loved ones that cared as much about this event as my father does,” Lieutenant Knowles said.
Lieutenant Knowles said the remembrance ceremony hits close to home for them because of their service.
“9/11 is a day that should live in infamy; it will be remembered forever, and we should never forget,” Lieutenant Knowles said. “It’s very significant to me, especially as a part of the fire service, because of the 343 firefighters and EMTs that we lost.”
Lieutenant Knowles’s father, Kevin Knowles, said 9/11 was a day that took so much from so many, who put others before themselves.
“A very close friend of mine, who was a lieutenant, for FDNY, who I talk to at least once a week; for people like him, the sentiment is all that lost their lives was almost in vain,” Knowles said.
Knowles hopes to continue to shed a light on the community to never forget everyone who was there on 9/11, like his friend.
“The lack of education, the lack of awareness in the general public, it’s a blip on the screen,” Knowles said. “We’re so proud here in Ocean City, to do the days of remembrance leading up to the event.”
