“”It’s been a long and overdue process:” Dorchester County Athletic Complex officially opens doors

CAMBRIDGE, Md.- – “It’s been a long and overdue process but we’re definitely excited,” Trieu said.

The 28,000 square foot Dorchester County Athletic Complex in Cambridge has now opened its door to the public. The project started just over a year ago through Program Open Space with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The program helped secure funding for renovations. “There’s four courts here so we can have multiple sports going at one time. We can have volleyball, basketball, tennis, and even pickle ball,” Dorchester County Parks & Recreation Director Duc Trieu said.

Trieu said the complex will fulfill a growing need for both adults and local youth. “It’s going to provide a safe environment for them here, ample opportunities for recreational programs, and I believe parents will be pleased with the opportunities it will provide their families,” he said.

The facility has already become a part of the Boys & Girls Club on Leonard Lane’s daily activities. Club Manager Gabriel Butler said they aren’t just working on the physical. “There’s been a lot of trauma in the city for the past few years and I’m seeing that a lot of our kids struggle with learning how to play with each other. Also, they’re struggling with just letting their hair down and being kids,” Butler said.

“I think that with this facility being open and the Boys & Girls Club here as well we’re going be able to meet those needs.”

Both organizations told 47ABC the complex is another example of the City of Cambridge investing in those that call it home. “Our kids right now that are here at the Boys & Girls Club are on a path to success. Any new projects or activities that are available are helping with that,” Butler said.

Dorchester County Parks & Recreation is also looking to offer rental opportunities and host and travel ball teams and other leagues. They also told the project wouldn’t have been made possible without the work of the county commissioners.

A ribbon cutting is in the works for the near future.
