MILTON, Del.- A ribbon ceremony Tuesday afternoon in Sussex County celebrated increased public access with the new Stephen P. Hudson Park trailhead.

The new trailhead will stretch 17-miles from Georgetown to Lewes and consists of a small rest area and parking lots.

The county purchased the property which was then leased to Sussex County Land Trust back in 2019. SCLT had plans of utilizing the space as a public park.

County officials said the project was able to cross the finish line thanks to a variety of sources from grant funding to community donations. “We would encourage the public to consider a donation to the land trust so that we can further this mission. It’s going to be a benefit to the quality of life for everyone in the county,” Sussex County Councilman for District 5 John Rieley said.

“It’s been very much a community effort and that’s really been a very gratifying thing to see.”

Along with Sussex County Council’s $450,000 contribution to park, other funding sources include Delaware Open Space Council and the Delaware Division of Parks.

County officials told 47ABC the park will also see the addition of a playground area, walking trails, and bathroom facilities by fall 2024.
