Delaware’s DSAMH offering Narcan training for opioid Epidemic
DELAWARE – Delaware’s Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health is a state agency that oversees treatment and recovery services throughout the first state.
They offer direct services for individuals who either have no insurance or limited insurance for health care. Experts say substance abuse and mental health concerns are underrepresented and a primary concern in the state of Delaware. Raising awareness and offering training to the public for take-home Opioid Rescue Kits are one of the many ways they fight the opioid epidemic across the state.
Brent Waninger, Director of the Opioid Response Center at DSAMH says, “The possibility of saving a life is why we train everybody in the general public. It’s why everybody should have this kit because you never know when you’re going to come across somebody who needs help.”
On a day-to-day basis, Trainer and Educator for the Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Amos Quio finds anyone available to use Narcan on someone who could be overdosing on an opioid based substance.
“When I do training with doctors and nurses, I learn a lot. I also learn a lot when I work with people who were incarcerated or people who were and are users themselves.”
