Police investigating series of shootings leaving several injured, one dead in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, Md.- “At first I thought It was firecrackers, but no it was actually gunshots,” one resident said.

Although they wanted to remain nameless, one resident describes hearing at least 30 rounds of gunfire on Jimson Road in Cambridge just after midnight on Monday.  It’s a sound they said is becoming far too familiar. “Frequently, we hear shots and noises.,” one resident said.

Cambridge Police Chief Justin Todd said an 18-, 19-, and 25-year-old were shot but thankfully are expected to be okay after being taken to a nearby hospital. Yet, Chief Todd tells us gunfire also struck nearby vehicles and homes. “30 rounds in a residential area is dangerous and we need to get the people that are going to put the lives of others at risk off the streets,” Chief Todd said.

Chief Todd added the event was potentially the result of the individuals targeting one another.

Within minutes, police say they received a 911 call for another shooting at 425 Henry St. and found a man identified as 37-year-old Kenneth Ramcharan on the back steps of the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene and Maryland State Police are now leading the investigation. “We’ve had two homicides so far this year. Last year, we had a total number of seven. We have a lot of work to do and progress to make in the city,” Chief Todd said.

Moving forward, Chief Todd said the department is focusing on bringing those criminals to justice. “And to do that it takes a community effort. It takes community-oriented policing. That means we need the community and police working together and showing support to help make each neighborhood better,” Chief Todd said.

Chief Todd says they were notified of the incident on Jimson Road thanks to their Shotspotter technology. He also tells us that only has a square mile long radius, which is why it wasn’t able to detect the other incident immediately. Despite that, he says they do have the ability to go back and get the information they need.

We did reach out to Maryland State Police on more details about the homicide investigation and have yet to hear back.

The Cambridge Police Department tells us it is unclear if both of those incidents are related.

The police department says that if you have any information on either of these incidents, you’re urged to contact them (410)-228-3333.
