Gulls hungry for playoff success
SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury football was left with a bad taste in their mouths last fall. The last time they stepped on the field the 9-1 Gulls were shutout by Mount Union in the first round of the postseason.
It’s the second straight season Salisbury has been one-and-done in the postseason.
“It makes you hungry. You want to go back and get something better than that,” said Gulls offensive guard Tony Mason.
“Almost have the same team, so we’ve got experience and we’ve got a little more hunger from the losses last year,” said running back Jaden Davis.
“A lot of kids said they learned from those experiences,” said head coach Sherman Wood. “And that’s our motivation this year.”
A lot of motivation and starting jobs on the line, including the starting quarterback spot.
With a week to go before the opening kickoff, this spot is still a toss up between three returning players with experience.
Coach Wood tells us the competition comes down to junior Micah Brubaker, junior Gage Katzenell-Hall, and sophomore Ben Hutchins.
“I think we have three quality guys who are working hard. And who knows who is going to be the starter on day one.”
The Gulls offensive attack has always been spear headed by the triple-option, but could this year’s flock of running backs be the best we’ve seen. Mason, a junior guard from St. Georges Tech, says it’s the best core since joining the Gulls.
“You’ve got guys like me, Joey Bildstein, Jaden Davis, guys that are hungry and ready to go. Honestly, I’ve never seen anything like that here.”
Salisbury University football goes for a fifth straight conference championship this fall.
The Gulls begin with a very tough schedule to start the season in September. Salisbury is at Washington and Lee Saturday at 1 PM.
