Grant funding restores several afterschool programs in Worcester County

WORCESTER COUNTY, Md.- Afterschool programs at several underserved Worcester County Schools are getting a big boost.

21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program is providing $800,000 to restore those programs. The impacted schools include Pocomoke Elementary, Middle, and High Schools; Snow Hill Elementary, Middle, and High Schools; and Buckingham Elementary School.  The grant is eligible for renewal for up to three years, contingent upon availability of funds.

The district says they saw 1,400 hundred students in their afterschool programs just this spring, representing a growing need for these services.

Funds will also support additional reading and math tutoring and establish the STAR programs at targeted schools. “It allows us to infuse art, health and wellness, social and emotional skills, career readiness, and there’s even a service learning and character education component,” WCPS’ Tamara Mills said.

“Having this additional funding will help us to be able to continue to provide such a wealth of opportunities for kids after the school day ends.”

Worcester County Public Schools says they’re still seeking additional funding for summer 2024 to keep students engaged year-round.
