Consumers take advantage of tax-free week in Maryland

SALISBURY, Md.- It’s day three of tax-free week in Maryland and some local businesses are seeing big sales as the week goes on.

With tax free week running until the 19th, parents and students are making their way to local stores to take advantage of the tax exemptions on clothes and school supplies. President of Vernon Powell Shoes, Joe Wright, said this is the perfect opportunity to stock up on school essentials.

‘Tax free week has become the busiest week of back-to-school season,” Wright said. “We definitely see a traffic uptick, and people want to save a few dollars any way they can.”

With consumer prices on the rise, high school junior Julia Gore said a tax-free week is what a lot of people needed to help relieve the financial burden of back-to-school shopping.

“My pockets get to be a little heavier this week, which is nice because every time I go here, I’m always spending a bunch, so it’s kind of nice to be making a little bit of savings,” Gore said.

For Uptown Cheapskate– a local consignment store– assistant manager Breelynn Pickerell said this week gives the business the perfect opportunity to connect with consumers.

“We are a small business,” Pickerell said. “It’s a lot easier for us, during tax-free week, to get closer to the community.”

Julia Gore adds that this is the time to buy the clothes she needs, at a cheaper price.

“If I see something I like, I’m going to buy it, because it’s cheaper now than it would be any other week, so I’m just taking advantage of that,” Gore said.
