High School Football Preview: WiHi Tribe
WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.– WiHi football is going to look totally different this time around, the Tribe has built a successful program the last few years under Isaiah Taylor. This time around Taylor is gone and so is that air it out offense.
“We’re going to be a physical team, we’re going to be aggressive, and disciplined as well,” said head coach James McMurdo.
The Tribe has a new slate of leadership in 2023, and they will have a new plan of attack as well as they are switching out the aerial attack for more ground and pound.
“I feel like we’re going to do great. We’ve got some O-Line returning from last year, and returning running back from last year too. So I think we’re going to do great,” said Takai Hugee.
Gone are superstars like Malique Leatherbury and quarterback Darius Foreman, but in steps some new faces, such as Takai Hugee, who’s looking to fill some pretty large shoes.
“Those guys, those guys are irreplaceable… It’ll be hard, but I can work through it though, me playing quarterback, just reading the defense, knowing when I can pull and when I can’t. It’s forced us to make sure that we’re coaching at the highest level possible so that all of our athletes can be in position to make plays like Darius and Malique were.”
The man leading the offense is a transfer from Delmar, and he’s brought a competitive fire to practice.
“Takai is awesome, he’s a competitor and that’s what I would say is my favorite thing about him is just how competitive he his. He’s learning super fast, never played QB before but neither did Andre Matthews or Darius Foreman before we put them there so.”
The 2A East region in the Bayside is filled with talented teams, and they begin with a tough test in week one at County Stadium.
