Police: Cambridge woman steals vehicle following shoplifting, leads officers on pursuit
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – A Cambridge woman was charged Thursday evening after police say she stole a vehicle following a shoplifting.
At around 5:45 p.m., Cambridge Police officers responded to Auto Zone for a reported shoplifting. While en route, officers were informed that the suspect had stolen a vehicle that was in the parking lot, and while trying to escape, the suspect ran over an employee of Auto Zone, causing injury to the employee.
When officers arrived at Auto Zone, they met with the employee, who reported that they were alerted to the shoplifting by the female suspect, who had concealed a total of $201.35 worth of merchandise and was trying to leave the store. The employee reportedly confronted the woman at the front of the store, at which point she dropped the items and fled, trying to get into a white 2000 Oldsmobile Alero, which was parked outside of the store and running while the owner was outside of the vehicle talking to another subject. The employee tried to stop the woman from getting into the vehicle, but she was able to get in and drive off at a high rate of speed, causing the employee to be dragged approximately 10 to 15 feet and get run over by the vehicle.
The employee was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The vehicle owner’s sister told police that there was a vehicle tracking system on the vehicle, leading police to find the vehicle in the area of the 500 block of Edgewood Avenue. Officers found the vehicle parked on the side of the road and as they approached the car, the female driver fled at a high rate of speed. The driver refused to stop and disregarded multiple traffic laws and directions from officers. As the vehicle approached the area of High Street and Bradley Avenue, the driver allegedly jumped out of the vehicle and tried to run, but was quickly apprehended by officers and K-9 units. The vehicle continued traveling down the roadway unoccupied, hitting a residence in the 1100 block of High Street, causing minor damage to the residence. The occupant was not injured.
Police say the suspect then informed them that she had just swallowed a quantity of cocaine. She was taken to the hospital for treatment and was later released.
The subject was identified as 33-year-old Kavisha Brown, who was found to have multiple warrants for her arrest from multiple counties. Brown was charged with first and second degree assault, fourth degree burglary theft, theft, motor vehicle unlawful taking, and numerous traffic related offenses and was held without bond.
