New funding helps lift up Home of the Brave

MILFORD, Delaware.- An organization aimed at helping veterans is getting some money to revamp one of their homes.

The Home of the Brave facility houses up to 15 veterans at a time. Board Chair of the organization Tina Washington says the name of the facility speaks for itself.

“We’re trying to do the best job possible for our veterans to make them citizens that can go back into their community to enjoy the fruits of their labor,” Washington said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be enjoying all of this.”

The organization will be receiving $350,000 to help restore the house they operate in to make it more comfortable for its residents. Director of Home of the Brave, Heather Travitz said the money will go a long way for everyone involved.

“Being able to rehab this for them means so much to all of us here at Home of the Brave,” Tavitz said.  “When they’re with us, we want them to feel comfortable that this is their home.”

Army veteran Laquan Brice said the new added kitchen features will help with his love for cooking.

“I’m in the kitchen all the time, so being able to get new kitchen appliances will be good for me, since I was a cook in the Army. That’s my safe haven,” Brice said.

While the stay in the house may be may short-term for some of the vets, officials say the sense of comradery the home builds is priceless.

“It’s still a family, and for them to have the comforts they’ll have, and feel like they have a facility they can be proud of, means the world to them,” Travitz said.
