NAACP pushes for student debt relief
MARYLAND.- The NAACP’s youth program is advocating for student debt relief for over 40 million borrowers across the nation.
The Maryland Youth and College Division of the NAACP traveled to different states to spread the word on student debt relief and the benefits of affordable education.
Dorien Rogers, the president of the Youth and College Division, stressed the importance of debt relief among all groups.
“We need to make sure that we’re forgiving as much money as possible for our borrowers,” Rogers said. “Not just our black and brown borrowers, but our intersectional borrowers [too.]”
Rogers called the $1.7 trillion of student loan debt a crisis that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.
“Student loan debt is providing barriers.” Rogers said. “It’s our obligation and our duty to make sure we’re uplifting those 40 million borrowers, given that we’re the second highest state, per average, with borrowed student debt.”
