Gov. Wes Moore’s Administration on Chesapeake Bay restoration
Chesapeake Bay Restoration is at the forefront of Governor Wes Moore’s Administration.
Today he and his team signed an executive order to continue crucial bay restoration.
The Moore Administration announced that three hundred and thirty million dollars of funding from local, state and federal funding is being used for Chesapeake Bay restoration and preservation.
Adam Ortiz with the Mid Atlantic’s EPA region is part of the federal assistance to the Moore Administration to preserve the bay that is so important to 18 million people along the shoreline region.
“EPA and the Biden Harris Administration is completely on the field with Gov. Moore and the state of Maryland and all the states of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed because we have to work together,” Ortiz said.
Governor Moore says that his administration is working closely with neighboring states since the May report showed an increase from a D minus rating to a C.
“There have been conversations with other states and I think the important thing that we know is that part of our leadership means working with other states and actually following if they are following the guidelines,” Gov. Moore said.
The Moore administration emphasized that with over 50,000 small-time farmers along the Chesapeake Bay region, cultural changes through sustainable farming practices, like cover crops used to protect the shoreline and enrich the soil, are crucial for bay conservation.
“We have been working very closely with our states and especially our farming community,” Gov. Moore said. “Agriculture has been a polluter historically but there is a strong willingness among farmers to do more conservation practices so we want to support them and help them succeed.”
“We are going to move in a unified front as a state government,” Gov. Moore said. “We are going to move in partnership with our local leaders and also our federal partners.”
