Delaware State Fair’s Hunger Relief Day and Senior Day
HARRINGTON, Del. – Hunger does not go on vacation. Monday is the Delaware State Fair’s Hunger Relief Day and Senior Day. So if you have any non-perishable canned goods then be sure to bring them to the fair because it could even save you a few dollars. All of the food donated here will go to countless families around the state of Delaware to cure as much hunger possible. Regional Support Specialist with Food Lion, Bob Mills, says that donations at the Delaware State Fair average 20 thousand pounds of food every year.
“Last year in the State of Delaware, foodlion donated 280 thousand meals to Delawarians in need,” Mills said.
The record being 26 thousand pounds, which they hope to break Monday.
“We load the tracker trailer with it and take it over to the food bank in Delaware in Milford branch.”
Mills says if fairgoers bring in five cans of nonperishable foods on Hunger Relief Day, they will get a free ticket of admission. It’s also senior day, meaning senior citizen bringing in 5 non-perishables or canned goods can get in for free and use their ticket for another day, like local resident Patty Koskey.
“I am actually free because I am a senior citizen,” Koskey said. “We sure did know that and we brought our donations. We got our tickets just a minute ago.”
Delawareans like Stephen Miller say they’re excited to make memories with their own families at the Delaware state fair, while donating to a worthwhile cause.
“Love to help out the community and we get to benefit as well,” Miller said. “My son is here, we have never been to the fair and heard great things. My parents loved coming here when they were younger so we wanted to check it out.”
