‘Backpack Challenge’ supply drive helps local families gear up for new school year

SALISBURY, Md.- Wicomico County parents have one less thing to worry about while getting their little ones ready for the new school year. The annual ‘Backpack Challenge’ supply drive is now underway.

Wicomico Partnership for Families and Children and the Newton Community Center are teaming up for the initiative.

Backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and hygiene products are just some of the items you can donate.

Community Program Coordinator Timothy Palmer tells us they’re fulfilling a huge need, adding that most local families don’t have enough resources to finish the first quarter of the school year. “If a student doesn’t have what they need, it impacts how engaged they are when it comes to their education. Outside of home stuff going on and other stuff in their community, when they have everything, they need for school the one thing they don’t have to worry about is being unprepared,” Palmer said.

Donations are being accepted until August 8th. They can be dropped off at the Newton Street Community Center Monday through Friday from 10AM-5PM.
