‘We’re here for you:’ Wicomico Public Library kicks off summer lunch program
WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.- Wicomico Public Libraries is making sure no kid goes hungry this summer. They’re bringing back their Summer Lunch Program for the second year.
It’s all thanks to a partnership with the Wicomico Board of Education who provides the meals.
Last year, 762 meals were given out to kids 18 and under. The program also provides a variety of educational activities and free take-home books.
Volunteer Coordinator Untia Bigelow says the program helps bridge the potential learning gap students face over the summer. She tells 47ABC it’s also a way to show the community that their work involves more than just books.”We do programming to help enrich families. We’re also just not focused on building relationships with our community partners, but being able to make sure that families understand that we’re here for you,” Bigelow said.
“I can’t even express how happy it makes me feel that the library can be able to bridge that gap for families.”
The program runs from 12:30p.m.- 2p.m. every Tuesday through Thursday at the Paul S. Sarbanes Branch until August 11th.
