UPDATE | Driver found dead after tractor-trailer went overboard on Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Update 6/23: The Coast Guard and other local Virginia agencies have suspended their search on Friday for the driver of a tractor-trailer after it went over the edge of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on Thursday afternoon.
Coast Guard crews were notified at 9:30 am. that salvage crews had found the driver deceased in the cab of the truck.
A local medical examiner confirmed the identity of the driver as 35 year old Christopher Scott. Salvage crews removed the debris from the water in the afternoon.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Virginia command center were notified at approximately 2 p.m., Thursday that the truck with trailer attached went over the rail with at least one person inside roughly 1 mile from Chic’s Beach.
Multiple agencies assisted in the search including Coast Guard Station Little Creek, Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish, Coast Guard Cutter Seahawk, Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, Virginia Beach Police, Virginia Beach Fire Department, Virginia Beach EMS, and Virginia Marine Resource Commission.
Details remain limited at this time. There’s still currently no information on what caused the crash. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
