Recreational marijuana begins in Maryland and OCPD is prepared

Starting July 1st, adult use recreational marijuana sales will begin across the state of Maryland. Ocean City Police Department says they will be fully staffed with around the clock patrols to make sure everyone has a fun, but safe time in the resort town.

Deputy Communications Manager of OCPD Ashley Miller says they will have 116 officers, plus seasonal officers and public safety aids patrolling mornings, evenings and nights.

She says it’s going to be an “educational experience” for both police and visitors. Miller tells us the biggest thing police will keep an eye out for is smoking marijuana in public.

“Now Ocean City on the boardwalk does have designated smoking spots for tobacco products,” Miller said. “Under the new law, Marijuana is still excluded from those locations.”

“So why yes, that is a smoking area,” Miller said “By the new laws for cannabis, you cannot smoke it in the designated areas on the beach and boardwalk.”

Anyone under the age of 21 is not allowed to purchase or consume recreational marijuana. Those caught, will face similar charges to possession of alcohol as a minor.

Ashley Miller says not every situation in the town will warrant a citation, as a big law change like this, will take some time to get used to.
