Recovery scholarship supports students postsecondary education goals, sobriety
DELMARVA – One scholarship opportunity is now available for students on their road to sobriety.
The Recovery Scholarship is a collaborative effort between the Atlantic Club and Worcester Goes Purple. It’s the second year the scholarship has been offered and we’re told the goal is to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction.
The two $1,000 scholarships will support students either going off to college or entering into a trade. To qualify, students must be sober for at least one year and write a two-page essay about their journey.
The scholarship committee says the hope is to raise awareness and support recovery. “Once you go to treatment or you get involved with a 12-step program or whatever works for you to be sober, staying sober is the greatest challenge,” Scholarship Chairman Collen Wareing said.
“We’re trying to bring families back together that were broken up as a result of addiction and substance abuse. So really that’s the purpose of this scholarship is to give someone that opportunity.”
The annual Walk for Recovery event helps generate scholarship funds. This year’s event will be September 9th on the Ocean City boardwalk.
The deadline to apply is June 30th.
