No bail for violent crimes involving a gun
Gun violence is a major concern not only for the citizens of Delaware but millions of people across the country. Officials say statistics in Delaware show fifty percent of individuals who have committed violent crimes with a handgun are repeat offenders.
Danny Short, State Representative for the 39th District of Delaware, says he is working tirelessly to pass legislation to deny bail for criminals arrested for a crime while using a firearm. He says he has spoken to police chiefs in Delaware when recently attending Delaware’s Police Chiefs Council receiving a positive reaction from almost every law enforcement agency and officer on the future piece of legislation.
Short has gone over several examples of armed gunmen committing crime, one specifically being a store clerk that was robbed at gunpoint and arrested in the morning, yet back on the streets during the same officer’s patrol by the end of the day.
“Multiple instances have been mentioned about the fact that even now people have become very hesitant in reporting the crime because the individual that they are signaling out is a criminal and back out on the streets and sometimes even back out before the police officer gets back from the court while they are still trying to establish no bail for the individual to keep them behind bars.”
Short says that these criminals are going to keep committing these acts until they get it wrong. If police catch the gunman because they did it wrong and their is a preponderance of evidence, the offender needs to remain behind bars until their court case comes up and they are convicted to keep the law abiding citizens on the streets of Delaware safe.
This bill is pointed directly at the violent criminals and repeat offenders who use guns to commit crimes. It is not aimed at responsible gun owners or those with a concealed carry permit.
The measure will be discussed when lawmakers reconvene in January of next year.
