Navy man’s wife, June Midgette, gets a new roof

DELMAR, De. – Residents on the Eastern Shore have been struggling with the housing shortage. Thanks to Habitat for Humanity, you may have more options than you realize to live in the place that fits you best. June Midgette is a Delmar resident who has lived on the Eastern Shore of Delaware for over 46 years. Her husband, John Guthrie Midgette the 3rd, was a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy. Their family home was built in the 1920’s and Midgette tells us it’s seen better days.
“My Husband passed away in 2007, and since then, I could not afford a new roof,” Midgette said. “Ohhhh… (giggle), I needed a new roof because this one was pretty bad and I could see that from the years of looking at it.”
Thanks to Habitat for Humanity partnering with Owen’s Corning, June is able to get the roof improvements she needs to live comfortable for the next few decades.
“I’m just ecstatic about it and I’m telling you that I’ve never been so thrilled when I got the call from Karen from Habitat for Humanity, then I got a call from Max saying that they were going to do the roof. It was just a blessing.”
Max Alesi is the co-owner and founder of Home Genius Exteriors, the company Owen’s Corning hired as their labor contractors. Alesi says a project like this could cost at least 50,000 out of pocket to renovate the roof to livable conditions.
“We are going to be doing all new plywood, we are going to be taking good care of her and giving her a platinum roofing system thanks to Owen’s Corning,” Alesi said.
It’s donations like this, Sheri Ewing with Habitat for Humanity, says are so important as many fixed income individuals struggle when having to pay for housing repairs.
“A lot of them have let these repairs go because they just don’t have the money to pay for it,” Ewing said.
June says there is no place in the world she would rather live other than the place she is at now.
“That is what is important to me,” Midgette said. “I want to stay here.”
