Housing Shortage on the Eastern Shore of Maryland

EASTERNSHORE, Md. – Habitat for humanity of Wicomico county says they’re only dealing with increasing demand. Sheri Ewing says the housing shortage has really hit this area hard. Older homes and skyrocketing rent prices, families are struggling to make ends meet.
Ewing says a household with a 35 thousand dollar income used to be able to get by, but now inflation and fluctuating housing prices are making things tougher.
“When you are making 35,000 and a decent place to live is 1,500 a month, then you have a problem, especially for your single mothers.”
Ewing says homeownership is the most reliable way to ensure housing. That’s because landlords can’t sell the property out from under you.
She says that’s happened to a significant number of people on the Eastern Shore.
