Berlin celebrates Pride Month by raising the flag over town hall
BERLIN, Md. – Many cities and towns, such as Berlin, are proud to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Sara Gorfinkel is assistant to the mayor. She says that Thursday morning, Berlin Mayor Zack Tyndall and Community members were at Town Hall to present the Mayor and Council with Pride Flags on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community.
“The Town of Berlin was very proud to hang the pride flag in front of town hall,” Gorfinkel said.
The local government of Berlin is not the only group of people standing behind the LGBTQ+ community. Many local business owners, like the Co-Owner of Island Creamery Jennifer Sorrell, has personally seen the historical town of Berlin become more accepting of everyone who comes to visit or stay.
“The support behind raising that pride flag today was just very soul filling and heartwarming,” Sorrell said. “It was and it just made me feel like good change.”
“I get to witness the locals that live here and how the community treats each other and communicates with each other and I really think it’s a beautiful thing to see here,” Sorrell said. “It feels good to come to the town of Berlin.”
Others are excited to see what more the town of Berlin has to offer for pride month.
Sophia Tomaselli, a family run bakery manager, says it’s important for small businesses to stand up for what they believe in and make everybody feel comfortable.
“Berlin, even though it is historic, is really becoming more progressive which is awesome because we like to celebrate the community and there is a large community that in the past has not been celebrated, so we try to keep a nice safe space for everybody.”
Longtime resident Gwen Lehman says the pride flag is an important symbol for the LGBTQ community.
“Inclusiveness, and I think that’s a great thing,” Lehman said. “That finally we are getting to a point where everybody is equally valued.”
