Recruitment efforts increased for lifeguards in Lewes

LEWES, Del.- After struggling to find lifeguards last season, the City of Lewes is now boosting recruitment efforts to attract talent.

Last year, the town had to rely on help from surrounding beach patrols to help guard both Savannah and Johnnie Walker Beaches.

In preparation for the upcoming season, Park and Marina Manager Janet Reeves says they’ve increased advertisement, raised pay, and created partnerships with local high schools.

They’ve also built new lifeguard stands and look to add more workspace for personnel.

Reeves tells us the industry still faces a nationwide shortage. Despite that, she says they’re doing everything they can to make sure those who visit their beaches will be safe. “If we want to retain a consistent beach patrol through the coming years, we had to do things to increase the retention,” Reeves said.

“We do realize that they’re a very important part of our city and keep our city safe.”

Reeves they’re also offering a reimbursement for the required certification class and working on their junior lifeguard program.

Reeves says they’re expecting a total of 15 lifeguards for the upcoming season with orientation scheduled for later this month.
