First-ever Ocean City pride parade hits boardwalk this June
OCEAN CITY, Md. – Ocean City will host its first-ever pride parade on the boardwalk this June in honor of Pride Month. The news comes after city council members unanimously voted in favor of the event.
The Buzzword Owner Mickie Meinhardt will spearhead the initiative.
She tells us most of her staff identify as LGBTQ+ and the goal was to find more ways the resort town could make open and inclusive spaces for the queer community. “This is a welcoming and family friendly community, but all families look different. There are all different kinds of people that come here, and we should make space for them and make sure they feel celebrated here,” Meinhardt said.
“It’s exciting to see the officials are willing to meet the community where we want to go and letting us make our town be the place we know it could be.”
Organizers tells us the event will include a handful of community partners, gift bags, snacks, and a Pride Parade display for photo opportunities. Applications for sponsors and partners are currently being accepted.
The parade is set for Saturday, June 24th from 10a.m.-noon.
Last summer, The Buzzword put on their very first Pride Prom which will return this year after the parade.
