Cruisin’ in Ocean City in full gear
OCEAN CITY, Md. -Ladies and gentleman get ready to start your engines because it is Cruisin’ weekend in Ocean City.
More than 100-thousand people are expected in the resort town, celebrating generations of love for classic cars.
“The people, the cars, the atmosphere its unlike anything else,” Coffin said.
Rob Coffin is one of thousands of gear heads cruising in classic cars in Ocean City showing off their pride and joy at the Convention Center this weekend.
“Well, in the other room we have mine and my wife’s pro street blown sixty-nine GT Opel GT,” Coffin said. “We just finished up the car with a blower motor in it and this is our first time out.”
It’s all part of the 32nd Annual Cruisin event. Coffin, a Delmar resident, has been coming for almost a decade, but he is not the only one. Meredith Herbert has been apart of the event for as long as she can remember, since her parents started the idea in the early 90’s.
“The town came to my parents thirty-three years ago and said they needed an event on the shoulder season on the weekend before memorial weekend because it was always a slow weekend in Ocean City,” Herbert said. “So, they created this car show in the inlet parking lot with a few hundred cars since the first cruising and since then it has grown to the show that it is today.”
Herbert says that since her parents have retired, they have passed on their legacy to both her and her sister, where they keep the show running.
“Many people that tend the event started riding in the back of their grandfathers hot rod years ago down the boardwalk and now they are the ones actually driving near the boardwalk.”
With three-thousand registered for the event, show-goers tells us it’s about so much more than just the cars. Jennifer Copsey says she drives all the way from Southern Maryland with her loved ones just to be able to create new vacation memories centered around the classic cars.
“The cars, seeing the cars, spending time with family. We came up with my dad and this is our annual vacation with my dad. So we come up for the cars and family time.”
The cars will cruise around the streets and out of the inlet parking lot until Sunday, May 21st, where it will end at 3 p.m.
