Berlin man sentenced on sex offense and assault charges
BERLIN, Md. – A Berlin man has been sentenced on sex offense and assault charges
The charges stem from an incident on June 5, 2022, when police were called to an Ocean Pines residence. It was learned that the suspect, 62-year-old Todd Yates, had sexually assaulted a female victim while she was sleeping over at her friend’s home. The victim told police that she was able to fight Yates off of her and run to a neighbor’s house to contact police. The victim was taken to Atlantic General Hospital for a SAFE exam, which revealed that she had suffered multiple injuries as a result of the attack.
Yates was subsequently arrested. On Monday, he was sentenced to 20 years for third degree sex offense and second degree assault. The judge ordered Yates to serve 10 years on each count consecutively and suspended 7 years of that sentence. He was also placed on 5 years of supervised probation on release and will be required to register as a Tier III sex offender for life and provide a DNA sample.
