Upcoming event raises awareness on suicide prevention

FEDERALSBURG, Md. – The mission of one event in Caroline County is to raise awareness around suicide prevention in wake of the loss of one community pillar.

The event is An Evening Kevin Hines and the Lucas Nagel Familysponsored by Channel Marker and Caroline County Public Schools.

Caroline County Sheriff’s Deputy Lucas Nagel took his own life after losing his battle with PTSD back in December 2022.  Nagel was also a school resource officer and a military veteran.

Guest speaker Kevin Hines, who struggled with his own mental health issues, jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge and survived that fall.  He’s now made it his mission to advocate for mental health.

Event sponsor Channel Marker tells us with a community still mourning, it was important to open up the conversation. They tell 47ABC that storytelling has the power to saves lives. “Everytime there is a loss such as this or a loss in general it impacts multiple groups of people. This is an evening of hope and healing,” Channel Marker CEO Cathy Cassell said.

“We just really need to get better about knowing what’s available, knowing what door to go through to get help, and just fighting the stigma of this mental health issue.”

That event is Wednesday, April 12th at 6:30 pm at the Colonel Richardson High School Auditorium in Federalsburg.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Established in January 2023, the Lucas Nagel Memorial Fund for First Responders supports programming that provides mental health services to first responders, veterans, and their families across Caroline County.
