HARRINGTON, Del. – Thunder CEO Charlie Pens, Sr. confirms that the state fairgrounds has decided to not renew the lease, the Thunder cleaning out the facility this week with an uncertain future.

Pens releasing a short Facebook video thanking the fans.

So now that the door is closed in Harrington, what’s next.

The period to declare dormancy is closed with the league, so they have two options. Cease operations, or relocate in the meantime while they work with the city of dover to build a new hockey arena.

The City of Dover tells us there is a parcel of land picked out, but there are still details to negotiate before they can begin building what we’re told will be the Dover Civic Arena.

We spoke with Pens today about the response they have seen from fans.

“Our fans in the Delmarva region have been just amazing,” Pens said. “I’m humbled and honored by it all. That’s why this decision from the state fair is really puzzling, because if you truly want to serve the community your entire community has spoken and they didn’t listen.”

We reached out to the fair grounds but have not heard back.

We are told there will be a press conference with more details from the Delaware Thunder sometime next week.
