Nonprofit hosts swap clothing event, push to increase no waste efforts
BERLIN, Md.- After a decade, Assateague Coastal Trust bringing back a unique event Sunday with a goal of eliminating waste on the shore.
It was their SWAP event, allowing community members to swap out their unwanted clothing items for other gently used ones.
There were more than 350 items to choose from.
The nonprofit tells us they not only wanted those who participated to walk out feeling refreshed, but to let them know they’re apart of making their community a cleaner place. “The message is less waste. Let’s think about our earth. What are we doing to it and what are we dumping?” Community Engagement Coordinator Debbie Dean said.
“We’re making sure that our water is clean for all. That’s really our mission. We are advocating for clean water.”
The nonprofit also tells 47ABC they’re looking into getting more involved with local composting and recycling efforts.
Items that weren’t swapped out Sunday will be donated to the Church Mouse thrift store in Berlin.
