17-year-old charged in connection to Christiana Mall shooting
NEWARK, Del. – A 17-year-old Newark teen has been arrested in connection to the shooting that occurred at the Christiana Mall earlier this month.
The incident happened just before 6:45 p.m. on April 8th. Police say three suspects confronted an 18-year-old male victim as he was leaving the food court and began physically assaulting the victim, at which point the victim’s two friends began fighting with the suspects. During the fight, one suspect reportedly pulled out a handgun from his waistband and began firing multiple rounds. The first victim and his friend, a 16-year-old male, were both hit by three rounds in the torso and lower extremities. The suspects then fled the scene.
There was one 18-year-old victim who was standing on the sidewalk outside of the entrance when he was hit by one round in the lower extremity. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Troopers have been able to identify one of the three suspects, and on Tuesday, the 17-year-old suspect turned himself in a Troop 2. He was charged with facilitating a riot, second degree conspiracy, and offensive touching. He was committed to a Division of Youth Rehabilitative Services facility on a $15,000 secured bail.
Police say the remaining two suspects have not been identified. Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to contact Detective H. Carroll at 302-365-8467 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
