Nonprofit breaks ground on new home for food pantry, push to increase distributions
MILTON, Del. – The Milton Community Food Pantry breaking ground and barriers to food access. A new facility will help the nonprofit make sure no Delawarean goes without food.
They purchased the land 2 years ago and organization leaders say the process was delayed due to permitting and other needs.
Now, the 1,500 sq ft. pole barn will provide them with more storage and freezer space.
President Donna Murawski tells us as the need for food assistance continues growing, the new facility will also allow them to increase the number distributions they have. “Right now, we only distribute food twice a month on the first and third Monday. We’re hope to increase that once the pole barn is built that way we can store more food,” Murawski said.
“The property is almost an acre in size, so even with the pole barn built we will have space to start our own garden so that we will have more produce.”
In 2022, the nonprofit served over 6,000 Delawareans and provided 75,000 meals. They expect the need for food assistance to increase now that many COVID-19 assistance programs have come to an end.
Murawski also tells us they’ve started building relationships with other organizations in the community to help with their efforts.
MCFP plans to begin operations by the end of the Summer.
