Seniors Helping Seniors Sussex County is a non-medical home service which employs older adults to help other seniors remain their sense of independence wherever they call home.

Owner Amy Mcdermott says most seniors have either a limited income or lack resources which makes it harder for them to keep a nutritious diet.

She advises having a variety of foods in your diet from veggies to protein. She also advises consuming foods filled with Calcium, Vitamin D, and Potassium.

McDermott also has tips to keep in mind for those with underlying health conditions. “Alot of people with diabetes aren’t aware carbohydrates become sugar in your system. So, they will start their morning with a high carb breakfast like boxed cereal and then later becomes sugar,” McDermott said.

“If you eat healthier you feel better. You feel better and you feel like you accomplished something. You start to look better and you’ll find you have more energy.”

McDermott also advises looking at labels to avoid items with high sodium and to increase your water intake.

She also says seniors who may live alone but want to cook in bulk to meal share with a neighbor or friend for variety.
