Delaware man sentenced in 2022 fatal DUI crash

KENT CO., Del. – A Delaware man has been sentenced for causing a fatal head-on crash while driving under the influence.

27-year-old Dillion Satterfield was sentenced last week to ten years in prison, followed by two years of intensive probation after pleading guilty to manslaughter, first degree assault, and DUI.

On May 29, 2022, Satterfield was traveling westbound on Bowers Beach Road near Frederica when he passed a long line of motorcycles and vehicles in the opposing lane of a no-passing zone. Satterfield was reportedly driving nearly 30 miles per hour over the posted speed limit and hit an oncoming vehicle driven by 69-year-old Daniel O’Brien of Lewes. Daniel sustained serious injuries, while his 68-year-old wife, Ileana O’Brien, was killed.

“This horrible crash was a tragedy that need never have happened; there is simply no excuse to get behind the wheel while under the influence,” said Attorney General Kathy Jennings. “I commend our prosecutors and the Delaware State Police for their work in achieving this just result; may it bring a measure of peace to the grieving O’Brien family.”
