Tips on managing Valentine’s Day depression, emphasis on self-love

DELMARVA – Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate with the one/those closest to your heart, but that’s not the case for all. Mental health experts tell us the day could also trigger depression.

Local Psychologist Dr. Kathy Seifert says this could come from experiencing a recent loss, a breakup, or just being single.

Dr. Seifert says you have the power to change that narrative including finding ways to celebrate your loved one’s life, surrounding yourself with friends and family, and the biggest one being celebrating yourself.

“You kind of want to talk to yourself about positive things so you can kind of counteract that sadness you’re feeling with positive thoughts,” Dr. Seifert said. “If it’s still hard to bear, the sadness that you’re feeling, get somebody to talk to. Someone that can help remind you of those good things about yourself.”

Dr. Seifert also advises spending the day doing things that bring you the most joy.

She adds that if what you’re experiencing does seem overwhelming, it may be an indicator that you should look into counseling services in your area.
