Salisbury Police Chief Barbara Duncan announces retirement

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury Police Department will soon be on a nationwide search for its next chief, as current Chief Barbara Duncan recently announced her retirement.

Duncan, a New York native, began her career with the department back in 2010.

She tells us one of her biggest successes has been significantly lowering the crime rate. She adds that was due to the hard work of her department and nurturing the relationship between the community and law enforcement.

Looking ahead, Chief Duncan tells us that the focus for the next chief will be continuing to keep to public safety a top priority. “Recruitment and retention are very, very difficult in this industry particularly in the state of Maryland right now. More focus and attention need to continue on that process to see what we can do in conjunction with our Legislators to see what we can do shift the tide a little bit,” Chief Duncan said.

“I’m going to miss not only the fraternity that’s here in the agency, but the city has that special way of really wrapping their arms around you.”

Chief Duncan tells us her retirement doesn’t mean she’s stepping away from law enforcement all together, as she plans to remain in it in some capacity in the future.

Chief Duncan’s last day will be June 30th.
