Police respond to incident at Somerset Intermediate School
WESTOVER, Md. – Law enforcement responded to an incident at Somerset Intermediate School Thursday morning.
We’re told the incident took place at around 8:50 a.m. Deputies responded to the school and located the School Resource Deputy assigned to that school had one individual detained. The deputy sustained minor injuries but was okay.
Because of Senate Bill 691, the Sheriff’s Office says that the student, who is under the age of 13, was unable to be charged with any crime despite the fact that the deputy was physically assaulted and sustained injuries.
Police also clarified that there was no “officer down” as originally relayed on the radio. They say that information was given by a civilian to the dispatch center, and as a result, was relayed over the system.
Both the Sheriff’s Department and school officials tell us that normal operations have resumed at the school.
