Single vehicle crash claims life of one in Smyrna

SMYRNA, Del. – An early morning fatal crash is under investigation in Smyrna.

At around 12:15 a.m., police say a 2010 Toyota Prius was traveling northbound on Route 13, approaching Smyrna Leipsic Road at a high rate of speed. For unknown reasons, the Prius reportedly veered off the right shoulder of the roadway and hit a mailbox before continuing to travel north across the northbound lanes and exiting the roadway a second time off the left shoulder at the intersection with Smyrna Leipsic Road. The Prius then hit a sign on the concrete median, crossed the northbound lanes again, and exited the roadway off the right shoulder a second time where the front of the vehicle hit a brick pillar and a concrete post at the same time. The vehicle then spun through the grass and hit a large tree.

The vehicle caught fire in the engine area following the impact, which quickly spread to the interior. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending results from the Medical Examiner’s investigation.
