PTSD Awareness

Caroline County, MD- Last week we sadly learned of the passing of Caroline County Sheriff’s Deputy Lucas Nagel on December 31st, 2022.

Nagel tragically took his own life after losing his battle with PTSD, and Caroline County officials are calling attention to the diagnosis.

47ABC sat down with Psychologist Dr. Heather Brown who told us that PTSD among veterans and first responders is incredibly common, and that if you are struggling it is important to seek help.

Dr. Brown says: “Many times individuals are hesitant to come forward because they feel they will be judged or something will be taken away from them, they are going to lose something… It is important that we move past that (stigma), so that people can talk about things they are not comfortable with or experiencing, and make sure we link them with services that know how to provide treatment for them.”

Nagel was a 6 year law enforcement veteran, and was active duty in the Army for two years before remaining active duty as a Army Reservist.

At the time of his passing he was serving as a school resource officer for Col. Richardson High School where he also served as a baseball coach, where he excelled at keeping the campus safe while making many personal friendships with the students and staff of the school.

A memorial service will be held at the high school, with visitation beginning at 10am with the service starting at 1pm.

If you or anyone you know is having feelings of self harm, please contact the suicide crisis lifeline by dialing 988.
